Amongst the actions of worship that are conclusive to subservience and khushu’ to Allaah, Mighty and Magnificent, is the supplication [du’a]. [108] Allaah, Most High, says,
“Call on your Lord Humbly and secretly.” [109]
“They outdid each other in good actions, calling out to Us in yearning and awe, and humbling themselves to us.” [110]
One of the deeds that displays subservience in supplication is raising the hands. It is authentically reported that the Prophet [sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] raised his hands when supplication on many occasions, the most significant of which was the supplication for rain in which he raised them till the whiteness of his armpits was visible. [111] Similarly he would raise his hands high on the eve of ‘Arafah, when at ‘Arafah.
