Will the Qur’aan be a Proof for You or a Proof Against You?

By Dr. Saleh as-Saleh [d.1429H]

The Qur’aan is a proof for the believer who establishes what is required of him/her regarding this Noble Book. The requirement is stated in the great hadeeth in which the Prophet [sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] declared that:

“Religion is advice…”

He [sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] clarified that part of this advice is:

“To Allaah, His Book…” [Muslim]

Advice to the Book of Allaah has many aspects to it, including:

The Way of Reciting the Qur’aan

By Imaam ibn Kathir [d.774H]

Concerning Allaah’s statement,

“And Rattil the Qur’aan Tartil.” [Al-Muzzammil 73:4]

Meaning, recite it slowly, for that will help in understanding the Qur’aan and contemplating it. This is how the Prophet [sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] used to recite. ‘A’ishah said, “He [the Prophet] used to recite the chapter slowly, so much so that it would be longer than chapters that were actually longer than it.” [1]

In Sahih Al-Bukhari, it is recorded from Anas that he was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allaah [sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam], so he replied, “He used to elongate the letters.” Then he [Anas] recited,

The Character of the One Who Learns the Qur’aan from the Teacher

By Imaam Abu Bakr Muhammad b. al-Husayn al-Ajurri [d.360H]

Muhammad b. al-Husayn said: Whoever recites the Qur’aan to a teacher and receives [instruction in] recitation form him, it befits him to show good manners in sitting before his teacher. He should humble himself in his sitting and be attentive towards his teacher. If his teacher reprimands him, he should bear this. If he scolds him, he should bear this also, be gentle with him and stick to holding him in awe and being shy before him.

The Effects of the Qur’aan upon the Hearts of the People

By Shaykh Khaalid al-Jaasim

The Prophet [sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] said:

“Allaah did not send any Messenger to a people except that He sent him with something through which people would believe in him.”

When Allaah [subhaanahu wa ta’aala] sends a Messenger, He sends him with a miracle or something that is amazing that people cannot reproduce and that is suitable for that time. If we look at the example of Moosaa [‘alayhi-sallam], we find that he was sent with a staff that was used for and turned into a snake, since in that time magic was wide spread. If we look to ‘Isa [‘alayhi-sallam], his time was famous for practicing medicine and finding cures for different diseases, so Allaah [subhaanahu wa ta’aala] sent him with that ability [by His will] to cure the lepers, the blind and the deaf. One of the greatest miracles that the Prophet [sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] was sent with is the Qur’aan. It is the miracle that will remain until nobody believes in Allaah and it is the miracle with which Allaah [subhaanahu wa ta’aala] challenged the Jinn and Mankind to produce the like thereof. Allaah described it as:

“[This is] a Book [the Qur’aan] which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember.” [Sad 38:29]

The Virtues of the Qur’aan

By Imaam Abu Bakr Muhammad b. al-Husayn al-Ajurri [d.360H]

Allaah – Mighty and Majestic – revealed the Qur’aan upon His Prophet [may Allaah bless him and grant him peace] and informed him of the virtue of that which he sent down to him. He also informed His creation, in his Book and upon the tongue of His Messenger, that the Qur’aan is a protection for whoever hold fast to it, a guidance for whoever seeks guidance through it, richness for whoever avoids worldly riches through it, a shield from the Fire for whoever follows it, a light for whoever seeks illumination by it, a cure for what is in the chests, and a guidance and a mercy for the believers.

Moreover, Allaah – Mighty and Majestic is His Name – commanded His creation to have faith in it and act by its command, so they must treat what is permits as permissible and what it prohibits as prohibited, they must have faith in its allegories, and they must take lessons from its similitude’s, saying, “We have faith in it. It is all from our Lord.” [6]

The Virtues of Applying the Teachings of the Qur’aan

By Mahmood bin Ahmad bin Saaleh ad-Dausaree

To be sure, the greater goal of every Muslims vis-à-vis the Qur’aan should be to apply its teachings, by obeying its commands, staying away from its prohibitions, and making it the overall blueprint of one’s life on an individual, a familial, and a social level. As much as a person recites the Qur’aan, he will not receive a complete reward until he applies what he recites, by bringing the teachings of the Qur’aan into the realm of practical application. Allaah [subhaanahu wa ta’aala] said:

“Those [who embraced Islam from Bani Israel] to whom We gave the Book [the Taurat [Torah]] [or those [Muhammad’s Companions] to whom We have given the Book [the Qur’aan]] recite it as it should be recited [i.e. followed].” [Al-Baqarah 2:121]

To “recite the Qur’aan as it should be recited” means to obey its orders and follow its teachings. [1]
